Support for the implementation of the new law 49-17 on environmental assessment in Morocco

The Technical Assistance Partnership—Expert Deployment Mechanism (TAP-EDM) is collaborating with the Government of Morocco’s Ministry of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development to support the implementation of the country’s new law 49-17 on environmental assessment. This new law 49-17 will contribute to programs and initiatives more systematically considering environmental and human impacts by proposing realistic and gender-sensitive mitigation measures, ensuring that the initiative is inclusive and considerate of all stakeholders.

The initiative will focus on Chapter II of the law, which concerns the Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) for projects of sector-specific and regional policies, programs, plans, and schemes.

A Canadian Expert for TAP-EDM will examine the Ministry’s approach and tools for strategic environmental assessment. The work will involve developing at least three sector-specific SEA guidelines, creating a gender-sensitive SEA training kit, and facilitating training sessions on these modules for managers in relevant sectoral departments and national experts.
