Alem Cherinet is an expert in strategic development, international affairs, and governance. With nearly two decades of experience in advising, project building, and organizational development, she is dedicated to strategy and interdisciplinary collaboration and is recognized for her diplomatic expertise. Alem specializes in complex governance and conflict, identifying and leveraging critical problem-solving mechanisms.
As an expert for the Technical Assistance Partnership – Expert Deployment Mechanism (TAP-EDM) initiative, Alem collaborates with other Canadian experts, Deborah Archibald, a Resource Management Policy and Regulatory Leader, and Freddy Cáceres, an Environmental and Social Sustainability expert. They are working with the Secretariat of Mining of the Government of Argentina to enhance the Secretariat’s team’s capacity to develop and implement multilateral dialogue and consultation processes within the mining sector.
Based in Calgary, Alem is the Senior Advisor for Strategic Development and International Affairs for the Extractive Resource Governance Program (ERGP) at the University of Calgary’s School of Public. Her leadership is demonstrated through her chairmanship of the School of Public Policy Engagement Committee, membership in the Canada-Mexico Chamber of Commerce, previous tenure at the Latin American Research Center, and affiliation with the Rethinking Latin American Studies from the South working group. Alem is also the Director of Aleph Strategic, an organizational consultancy firm.
Alem holds undergraduate degrees in International Relations and Latin American Studies and a Master’s in Political Science from the University of Calgary, specializing in security and conflict.
