The Technical Assistance Partnership – Expert Deployment Mechanism (TAP-EDM) with Canadian Technical Expert, Carlos Alberto Ortega is collaborating the Department of Geology and Mines under Bhutan’s Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources to assess the country’s current mining policy framework.
Mining is a priority sector for Bhutan’s economic development, and it is undergoing significant reforms, including policy and legislative updates. The Department’s key responsibilities include formulating mining policies and regulations, conducting geological mapping and mineral exploration, and developing mineral resources aligned with Bhutan’s social and economic policies and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).
The initiative will focus on the legal and policy environment, financial benefit optimization, socioeconomic benefit optimization, environmental management, the post-mining transition, and artisanal and small-scale mining. Following the assessment, experts will provide technical support to the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources in priority areas.
