Social Performance and Human Rights Expert

Luc Zandvliet is a social performance and human rights expert with over 20 years of experience supporting constructive company-community relations in frontier markets. During his career, he has conducted over 150 site visits to over 40 countries at the invitation of companies, governments, and NGOs. Luc specializes in mining, oil and gas, renewable energy, and agroforestry contexts. He has collaborated with Indigenous Peoples in Canada, the United States, Suriname, and Tanzania, advising companies on Free, Prior, and Informed Consent (FPIC) and agreement-making.

As a Canadian Technical Advisor for the Technical Assistance Partnership – Expert Deployment Mechanism (TAP-EDM), Luc is collaborating with the National Commission on Indigenous Peoples (NCIP) of the Government of the Philippines to enhance their ability to support Indigenous Cultural Communities/Indigenous Peoples (ICCs/IPs) in understanding the impact of large-scale mining projects. He aims to support the NCIP’s mandate to safeguard and promote the interest and well-being of Indigenous Cultural Communities and Indigenous Peoples regarding their beliefs, customs, traditions, and institutions within the context of mining activities.

Luc is frequently sought after by companies, governments, and civil society organizations to facilitate strategy sessions, present industry trends, benchmark best practices, or speak on specialized topics such as grievance management systems and performance management.

He is the author of Getting it Right: Making Corporate-Community Relations Work, a practical guide for company managers and business school students. The book highlights best practices in company-community relations and has become a go-to resource for many organizations.

In addition, Luc has developed public guidance on critical tools and frameworks, including risk assessment, social investment strategies, and grievance mechanisms, benefiting industry associations, governments, and multilateral financial institutions.
